Challenge:

 

On January 12, 2016, President Barack Obama laid out a moon shot goal in his final State of the Union address: to end cancer as we know it. Cancer, however, isn’t one disease; it’s many. While medicine and science continue making steady progress, cancer remains the number two killer, heart disease.  The Cancer Moonshot provides an opportunity to modify our approach to preventing, detecting, treating and curing cancer.

 

Deloitte and the XPRIZE Foundation formed a strategic alliance, launching a fellowship program focused on this challenge. Deloitte put together a team of consultants, doctors, cancer survivors, and creatives to develop an Impact Design proposal – a framework for a new XPrize Grand Challenge.

 

XPRIZE hand-selected and convened nine international teams to share their Impact Design Proposals across a portfolio of Grand Challenge areas at the Visioneers 2016 Summit. A group of 250 mentors, composed of prominent corporate and political leaders, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, artists, technologists, and scientists, evaluated and critiqued nine XPRIZE proposals at the summit.

 

A centerpiece of the Conquering Cancer XPrize proposal at the 2016 Visioneers Summit, this video was challenged with answering why an XPrize would be the unique mechanism to bring together the talent, capital, and incentives to crack the code on early cancer diagnosis.

 

 

Solution:

 

In response to the Cancer Moonshot call to action, the Cancer Visioneers Team, made up of passionate scientists, graphic designers, musicians, mathematicians, cancer survivors, and physicians, took a fresh look at the disease, dissecting it from every angle to come up with innovative approaches to preventing, detecting, and treating this devastating disease.

 

The video we put together tells the overarching story of why a cancer-focused XPRIZE is important now, and how focusing on early detection is the key to making a difference, as mammography demonstrated in the 1970s – despite seeing only incremental improvements since.

 

We highlighted how The XPRIZE model is the unique tool to enable innovation and market mechanisms designed to produce new initiatives…finally bringing together the talent, capital, and incentives to crack the code on early cancer diagnosis.

 

 

Result:

At the culmination of the summit, the Conquering Cancer proposal was selected as “Ready to Launch”, the highest honor possible, and moved on to the next stage of launching the challenge.

 

Being deemed “ready to launch” at the Visioneers 2016 Summit demonstrated the validity of the concept, the global need for early cancer detection, and broad support of the XPRIZE community for our execution of the Conquering Cancer XPRIZE

 

The Conquering Cancer XPRIZE was featured as an initiative by the White House in its “Cancer Moonshot Fact Sheet.”
